The rural Ireland into which Marie Muldowney Woods was born in 1937 could scarcely be imagined today. It was a time of immense deprivation, physical and social, for many. Women had virtually no agency over their own lives. Financial independence and birth control did not exist. Many lived lives of unremitting domestic slavery. From early childhood, Marie was acutely aware of inequality. She went on to advocate powerfully and fearlessly for women's rights through her membership of the Labour Women's National Council. She describes her long, influential, and action-packed life with searing honesty.
